Thames River Data: Caution– Provisional Data

The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (LTVCA) in coordination with the Upper Thames Conservation Authority (UTRCA) monitors stream flow and meteorological conditions within the Thames River watershed on a continual basis. The information is collected at several remote sites, and collected at the UTRCA’s Watershed Conservation Centre in London, Ontario. Data are usually posted to the web site early each morning during low flow periods, and more frequently during times of flooding. Data posted to this web site are provisional data that have not been reviewed or edited and are subject to change. These data are provisional until reviewed and approved by the Conservation Authority or our partner agencies.

Factors affecting the accuracy of water level and flow data may include:

  • backwater from ice, weeds or debris,
  • malfunctioning equipment and/or routine maintenance of equipment may cause data spikes,
  • sediment accumulation may lead to plugged intake,
  • location of the instruments

Factors influencing the accuracy of rainfall data include:

  • rain funnels and instruments may become fouled with debris or insects,
  • the tipping bucket mechanism may malfunction,
  • the tipping bucket rain gauge may not properly record precipitation during freezing weather conditions,
  • location of the instruments.

Factors influencing the accuracy of temperature data include location and calibration of the instruments.

River levels and flows can change rapidly in response to water entering the river as a result of rainfall or snowmelt, or changes in discharge from the reservoirs operated by the Conservation Authority.

Users of the this data are cautioned to consider the provisional nature of the information before using it for decisions that concern personal or public safety or the conduct of business. The Conservation Authority assumes no responsibility for the correctness of the information contained in this website nor liability to any user of such information, regardless of the purpose.
