Rondeau Bay Barrier Beach

Media Release – Join Us for an Update by the Rondeau Barrier Beach and Navigation Channel Advisory Committee

February 28, 2022

For Immediate Release February 28, 2022

Rondeau Bay – On March 3, 2022 at 6 pm, the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (LTVCA) and Peter Zuzek from Zuzek Inc. will provide an update to community members of Erieau and Shrewsbury on the status of the Rondeau Barrier Beach.  Please register for this virtual presentation at this link: https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZwpduyupjkjG9LgKOUeGiXITQFCZFezcsaX

Additionally, on behalf of the Rondeau Bay Barrier Beach and Navigation Channel Advisory Committee, we are reaching out to potential stakeholders to work together towards a common goal of restoring the Rondeau Barrier Beach, which will protect the shoreline and wetlands of Rondeau Provincial Park and the navigable channel to Lake Erie.  Specifically, the committee is asking that stakeholders be part of the collaborative and its efforts to help address the impacts from a changing climate.  View Save the Date poster here.

With historic high water levels in Lake Erie, the Rondeau Barrier Beach has significantly eroded and as such, its function of controlling sediment movement and protecting Rondeau Bay from Lake Erie waves is threatened. Current research and studies show that should this trend continue, low lying development along Rondeau Bay shorelines could be subjected to severe erosion and flooding. Additionally, the unique ecosystem of Rondeau Bay is at risk, the operation of the Erieau harbour will continue to be compromised, and coastal wetlands will continue to be lost. This is a serious environmental, recreational, commercial and social issue that must be addressed in the near future, to protect critical species at risk habitat and the social and economic co-benefits derived from the ecosystem.
