Highlights:

• Rainfall Warning and Special Weather Statement Issued by Environment Canada
• Some areas in western LTVCA watershed have seen 75 mm or more rain this afternoon
• Some areas in eastern LTVCA watershed have seen up to 50 mm of rain this afternoon
• Ponding and localized flooding could be seen especially in the western LTVCA watershed
• Smaller watercourses in the west could rise and spill their banks into adjacent low-lying areas.

Message:

There is a slow moving weather system over LTVCA watershed today bringing thunderstorms and heavy rains. A Rainfall Warning had been issued by Environment Canada for the western areas of the watershed and a Special Weather Statement had been issued for the eastern areas. This has led to varying amounts of rainfall across the watershed. Some areas in the east of the watershed (mostly Middlesex into Elgin) have seen up to 50 mm of rain. However, some areas in the west (Essex County and western Chatham-Kent) of the watershed have seen over 75 mm of rain already. The rain has not completely moved out of the region yet and there is the potential for further rain later today into tomorrow morning.

Most of the smaller watercourses in the east should be able to handle the amount of rain that has already fallen. However, there may be some areas that see ponding and localized flooding.

Areas in the western LTVCA, which has seen more rain, could also see areas of ponding and localized flooding. Some of the smaller watercourses may not be able to handle the amount of rain seen and may spill their banks into adjacent low-lying areas.

The Thames River is not expected to rise significantly due to these rains. The LTVCA does not expect to have to operated any of its flood control works.

People should take extra caution and avoid the river, ditches and streams. The combination of slippery banks and fast-moving water can be dangerous. Standing water can also present its own unseen hazards. Children, pets, and livestock should be kept away from the water.

Officials will continue to monitor the situation and update this advisory as necessary.
