Rick has been gardening since he was a kid, but after discovering native plant gardening in 2005 he has been immersed in the subject of gardening with native species. With a bachelor’s degree in natural resources management (with a minor in landscape ecology), and a master’s degree in environmental biology, Rick taught at the community college level for many years before moving to Manitoba, where he was the academic chair for the Agriculture, Environment and Horticulture programs at Assiniboine Community College in Brandon. While there, Rick worked as a volunteer with the Spruce Woods Provincial Park interpreter to create native plant gardens around the visitor’s centre. After that, Rick spent a short stint as Academic Chair of the School of Natural Resources at Fleming College in Lindsay, ON before retiring to his garden in 2018.
Over the years Rick has removed all non-natives from his half-acre backyard in southwestern Ontario, replacing them with over 320 species (and counting) of native plants and his garden has been part of several organized garden tours in recent years. Rick has recently started to provide consulting services to design native plant gardens in southwestern Ontario and he is very active on several native plant gardening Facebook groups.
