Stewardship Initiatives
The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority has encouraged the planting of trees for windbreaks, small woodlots and wildlife shelter. Trees reduce soil erosion and heating costs, increase crop yields, enrich topsoil, absorb noise pollution and carbon dioxide, provide wildlife shelter, beautify and cool environment, provide wood and paper products, enhance recreation areas and produce oxygen! Since 1985, over 1.5 million trees have been planted in the watershed and region with the help of the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority.
Interested in planting trees on your property? See below for available Habitat Restoration Grants and then visit our Spring Tree Planting page.
The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Foundation also offers a Memorial Forest Program across the Lower Thames watershed.

Through the Chatham-Kent Greening Partnership (Municipality of CK, Stewardship Kent and the LTVCA) we are working at increasing our tree cover. One such project that addresses this, is what we call Trees for Tomorrow. With assistance from area high schools, Communities in Bloom, Chatham-Kent Community Living and many other volunteers, we collect local native tree seed. The seeds are properly stored and sowed in the municipal greenhouse, then later planted at our tree nursery.
In 2008 we grew over 10,000 seedlings. The aim of this project is education, with a bi- product of trees that will be planted locally.
If you would like to assist with this project, please contact the LTVCA.
