OPP
Warns to Lock Your Vehicles and Protect Belongings
Message from Middlesex OPP (April 20, 2009):
Middlesex OPP has been receiving an
increasing number of reports of thefts from vehicles. The warmer weather is
bringing hikers out to area trails. The unattended vehicles have brought the
thieves back out also.
Middlesex OPP will be dedicating patrols to these areas.
In the incidents reported this year, most of the vehicles have been locked however valuables have been on display inside. The doors have been forced open or windows broken to retrieve the purses, wallets, iPods, cell phones and jewellery left on the seats or on the dash.
Last year the Middlesex OPP Crime Unit posted signs at these high theft areas to alert motorists to the crimes. The signs state “Please Remove Your Valuables and Lock Your Vehicle”. Motorists are getting the lock your vehicle part of the warning but the remove your valuables part has not been heeded.
When planning a hike, Middlesex OPP advises to leave any unnecessary valuables at home. Any valuables that must be brought with you should be carried on your person. Park close to high traffic areas as thieves tend to target vehicles parked further away from the roadway. Report any suspicious activity immediately. A licence plate number and a description of the occupants is valuable information for police follow up.
Anyone with any information about these thefts are ask to contact Middlesex OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) www.londoncrimestoppers.com
