River and Creek Safety Program
Background Developed in 2002, the River and Creek Safety Program helps Grade 2 students increase their understanding of river systems and the hazards associated with them, specifically in relation to the Thames River and the Lake Erie shoreline. The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority targets schools located within the lower Thames River watershed. The program includes both guided and interactive activities using materials such as a large storybook, an even larger wooden puzzle, a water safety bingo game, and a find the water droplet activity using large poster pictures. To help follow up the session, an activity booklet will be provided to the teacher. Through this one hour in class program, the students have fun while learning about making appropriate safety decisions around waterways. The River and Creek Safety Program is offered to watershed schools during the late winter and early springtime. Sponsorships from watershed service clubs and residents ensure that the River and Creek Safety Program is free for sponsored schools.
